In a gripping display of determination, 17 year old, Finn Tapper won the CentrePort International Youth Match Racing Regatta, held in Wellington by the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club. For Tapper this is his first international title. Representing the CYCA, the young team of Tom Grimes, Nick Then and Paddy Dawson held a 17 race consecutive winning streak after losing their first two matches throughout the four day competition. On the final day, they sailed higher and faster to take out the finals 3-0 over Ben Caundle from host club Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club. Racing was conducted in Evans Bay, east of the yacht club in a steady 14-18 knot southerly breeze.
Eight crews from New Zealand and Australia competed in the event, sailed in the RPNYC fleet of Elliott 6 keelboats. The three days of racing was tight as the young crews displayed their skills and determination to produce their best results. The final race of the finals saw Tapper in full confidence, as he shut out Caundle at the Race Committee boat end as the start gun went, to again lead around every mark and cross the line as 2017 Champions.“It has been an amazing week here in Wellington. The boys, the competitors and officials did a great job all week and we are stoked to come away with the trophy,” commented Tapper post racing.“I would like to thank CentrePort for sponsoring the event, and of course the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia for their continued support and allowing us to compete here in Wellington this week,” he finished.
