YOUTH skipper James Hodgson has defended his title, taking out the 2017 Australian Schools Match Racing Championship in Brisbane.Representing Matthew Flinders Anglican College, Hodgson, 17, and his crew of Taylor Rogers, Zach Edwards and James Beveridge, even with 17 wins and one loss still had to use every bit of the three-day competition to fight their way to the title.
Tasmanian Sam King also finished with 17-1, but lost to Hodgson on a countback. "A couple of races we were pushed right to the end including when we raced Sam King" Hodgson said.
Competing in the RQYS fleet of Elliott 6 metre yachts, the 10 youth teams from NSW, Tasmania and Queensland raced in heavy winds gusting to 18 knots on the first two days, then it eased back considerably for the final day of the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron hosted regatta."It was perfect conditions," Hodgson said.
The second team to represent the Coast was drawn from the Mooloolaba Yacht Club's Youth Sailing Squad and skippered by 15-year-old Frazer Brew with crew of Max Williams, Emily McGregor and Ava Brew. The team sailed only three times together prior to the start of the regatta. He has previously crewed for Hodgson in last year's school competition in Hobart and in the national youth championship in Sydney.
