Elliott 6m selected for Stena Match Cup Sweden
World Match Racing Tour event, Stena Match Cup Sweden in Marstrand, has appointed the new Elliott 6 as the boat for the women's class. The decision to use the same racing boats as the 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition will create a pinnacle event for women's match racing.
WMR, which in the 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition will be sailed for the first time, has developed into the crown sailing class for women. The entry of the new racing class of the Olympic Sailing Competition has already given a dramatic increase of elite sailing for women around the world. Therefore it is a natural step for Stena Match Cup Sweden to open up for the Olympic match racing class already in tthe 2010 event. The entry of the Elliott 6m class for the women in Stena Match Cup Sweden will even further strengthen the premiere sailing event in Sweden, which already is a Championship event for male match racing skippers and teams, part of the World Match Racing Tour. Ten International female teams will race the Elliott 6 at Marstrand this year. The teams have a crew of three, all of them are top stars in their countries in female match racing.
This can become the breakthrough in racing for Swedish women's elite sailing. It will also increase participation from national teams with all it's support and professionalism, says Stefan Rahm, director of the Swedish Sailing Federation. The two Swedish teams will be lead by the two star skippers Anna Kjellberg, the new star who became runner up at Stena Match Cup Sweden the last two years, and Linda Rahm, previously ranked second in the world. The Swedish teams will meet the world's top ranked teams and stars this summer. It will be a great measure of their potential, any one team of the ten can reach the top of the podium in the end of the week. That's how tough it will get, says Martin Sohtell, project manager of the event organizer. Stena Match Cup Sweden became one of the earliest events to establish a women's class in 1999. As a result Sweden has grown to a strong nation within women's match racing.
The campaign in the Elliott class is a natural step in a long term commitment that GKSS has had to WMR. It is really thrilling to tie the teams athletic efforts to reach the Olympics with the largest sailing event in Sweden, says Peter Klock, managing director of GKSS. Matt Owen and crew win fourth National Title
Close racing was not enough to stop Matt Owen and crew of Walter Turnbull who have won the Elliott 7 Australian National Titles for the fourth year running. The strongest fleet ever contested the Australian Elliott 7 titles. The event was conducted by WMYC and the Queensland fleet led by Andrew Barney. The organisers did a magnificent job and the Class agreed to hold the National Titles there again in 2010. There was a glimmer of hope for the others in the third race when Mitchell Sails won. The second day began with a windward leeward race and despite extreme weather changes WalterTurnbull managed to sail away from the fleet to win by a very large margin. The fleet then headed off on a passage race around Peel Island the unsettled breeze had boats on either side of the course leading at some stage. The fleet then headed back up the bay with the committee wisely deciding to shorten the course. WalterTurnbull took line honours again. The final day was the closest racing of the series with the boats rounding the bottom mark 3 or 4 wide. WalterTurnbull sealed their series with a win in the first race with Evergreen and Barney Army battling out for the remaining podium places. A close fought battle between the two boats saw owner Wayne Tomlinson and fellow Auckland crew members finish just 29 minutes behind the eventual winner Pussy Galore. The first 48 hours upwind in 30 to 40 knots was a punishing slog for the crew, several of them on their first offshore race. Line Honours In Rolex Fastnet
I CAP MAXIMUS Elliott 30m docked in the winners berth at Queen Annes Battery Marina, Plymouth. Photo courtesy of Helen Nance. CELEBRATIONS began early this morning as ICAP Maximus crossed the finish line in Plymouth Sound, to round off a perfect Fastnet race for co-owners Bill Buckley, Charles St Clair Brown and their crew. In spite of stiff competition and some very challenging light airs sailing, ICAP Maximus extended its lead over Skandia Wild Thing, the Volvo 70 Telefonica Movistar and other contenders for line honours, to cross the line just after 08.20 local time on Wednesday morning. Speaking shortly after the Super Maxi had docked, Charles St Clair Brown thanked Rolex, the sponsors of the 2005 event and praised his crew for their fantastic efforts. Although ICAP Maximus finished ahead of the fleet by a phenomenal time margin, the 600 mile course taken over the past three days had been far from easy. After rounding Fastnet Rock at 03.33 local time on Tuesday morning, the high pressure system sitting over the Irish Sea frustrated efforts to make good time away from Fastnet and back towards the Scilly Isles. Winds as low as 2.5 knots made precision helming and precise calls for sail changes absolutely crucial, as the ICAP Maximus crew headed south to exit the high. By late afternoon the winds were building again, Mike Quilter, and key helmsmen Greg Elliott the yachts designer, Richard Bouzaid, Tom Dodson, Jeff Scott and George Hendy worked hard to find wind and heat up the pace. As Tuesday evening drew on the wind built and ICAP Maximus recorded its fastest speeds of the race during the nights reach towards Plymouth. With 16 knots showing at times, significantly above the wind speed of 13 knots, the Kiwi yacht headed for line honours and a place in the history books. During all the race, apart from the period a few hours after the start, the only competitors seen were on the distant horizon. Once we had rounded the Fastnet Rock, commented Charles St Clair Brown, we were quietly confident that, we would finish strongly. His confidence proved correct and, with the support and assistance of ICAP, this super maxi has notched up yet another race win, achieved in difficult and demanding conditions.

The 100-year old west to east race record across the North Atlantic, between New York and the Lizard was broken this morning when Robert Millers Mari-Cha IV a 140 foot (43m) schooner that is the worlds longest modern grand prix race yacht, crossed the line due south of Cornwalls Lizard point at 10:05:23 UTC making her time for the 2,925 mile course from the Ambrose light off New York harbour, 9 days 15 hours 55 minutes and 23 second at an average speed for the course of 12.61 knots. so Mari-Cha IV, despite the inclement weather conditions experienced during the first half of the race, has still taken 2 days, 12 hours, 6 minutes and 56 seconds off the race record. Mari Cha 1V continued on up the English Channel to complete the final part of the race which ended off the needles, Isle of Wight.
