Ran Tan Line Honours in Wellington to Nelson Race

10 Feb 2009

Heavy conditions in Cook Strait then light air in Tasman Bay played havoc with the 2010 Wellington to Nelson race but nothing deterred the big, athletic Elliott 50 ft Ran Tan II, which trekked into Nelson in just over 18 and a half hours to take line honours and the offshore handicap title. The big ocean racer hit a top speed of 23 knots in Cook Strait, and owner John Meade went home with the coveted Dimock Trophy for his and the crews efforts. Crew members reported that conditions in Cook Strait were fearsome and then it was so slow it was hard work getting around Stephens Island. Ran Tan was followed home by Nelson boat Mrs Jones. An Elliott 11 metre sailed Nelson yachtsman Charlie Gallagher and his crew. Following the race was the Tasman Bay Cruising Club regatta which included a number of Wellington boats and the core of Nelsons racing fleet. Winning a number of races throughout the regatta Mrs Jones was second overall. Pictured Elliott 11 Mrs Jones
