Young sailors throughout the world are now enjoying encounters of match racing, with an international circuit. Australia is no exception with events such as the Warren Jones International, the Hardy Cup, the Harken International and the Australian Open and Youth Match Racing Championships. The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania hosted the inaugural Australian Schools Match Racing Championship last weekend. The event was held in the RYCT fleet of Elliott 6 yachts over 3 days .A full round-robin was completed between 11 crews from schools in Tasmania, New South Wales, the ACT and Queensland, the event ended with two cliff-hanger matches. Experienced 16-year-old James Hodgson and his crew of Fraser Brew and Taylor Rogers from Queensland’s Matthew Flinders College in Mooloolaba won the best of five match final from Tasmania’s Sam Abel and his crew of Jack Allison and Will Cooper from Hobart’s Hutchins School,3-2. An experienced match racing skipper, Hodgson last year finished runner-up in the Australian Youth Match Racing Championship. The Petit final was won by Sam King with his crew of Nick Smart, Charlie Zeeman and Howard Tapping also from Hutchins School. The RYCT purchased their fleet of Elliott 6s last year. The Mooloolaba Yacht Club runs an excellent Youth Keelboat Programme held in their fleet of Elliott 6 yachts.
