Created in 1998 as an International multi-sport event with participants from the Asia-pacific region the Arafura Games were last held in 2011. This year the Northern Territories brought back the Games which presented opportunities to showcase unique arts, culture, history and trade investment links. The Games is an event through which friendship an understanding between competing nations and the Northern Territory is fostered.
Yachting Australia worked together with the Darwin Sailing Club to organise and run the sailing event. Match Racing was selected as the sailing discipline and the Elliott 7 selected as the keelboat for the event. The DSC ran the regatta i in their fleet of identical Elliott 7 yachts. Being identical, responsive, fun yachts to sail meant the event provided some great opportunities for tough match racing battles as the skippers and crews battled to control their races from start box to finish.
Eight teams representing four nations raced over four days in a variety of conditions in Darwin Harbour. The Gold Medal winners were James Hodgson and his team representing Queensland. Megan Thomson and crew from the RNZYS New Zealand won silver, with Team India - Taramati Mariwade taking out the bronze medal. Congratulations to all competitors, organisers and volunteers on a very successful regatta.
